The Challenge Exam for NFPA Firefighter I is designed to give trained responders the opportunity to obtain national certification. Evaluations, including a written exam and multiple skill stations, will be conducted over two days. Upon successful completion of this objective process, national certification is awarded to the candidate, and the candidate’s name will be entered in both the IFSAC and ProBoard registries.
Written Test: There is a 100-question written exam. Candidates are given two attempts. Additional attempts at the written exam can be scheduled at a regional test site at a later date.
Skills Testing: Skills are referenced to NFPA 1001 JPRs. Some of these skills involve live-fire evolutions. Candidates are given two attempts at each skill.
Skill Sheets: Candidates will be evaluated by Performance Evaluation Checklists (skill sheets) that include mandatory and randomly selected skill sheets. The skill sheets can be viewed here. Mandatory skill sheets have an M in the file name.
