Technical Rescue Awareness Online Information

Overview:
This course will provide first responders with general knowledge to work on the scene of Technical Rescue incidents during the initial stages. There are 8 areas of instruction: General Standards, Structural Collapse, Rope Rescue, Confined Space Rescue, Vehicle and Machinery Rescue, Water Rescue, Wilderness Search and Rescue, and Trench / Excavation Rescue. It is the intent of the course to provide participants with an understanding of laws, standards, terms, operating procedures for first due companies, and risks associated with each type of incident. The areas of instruction can be identified in N.F.P.A.1670, and follow the objectives of the Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal. This online course covers the materials delivered in the 8 hour Technical Rescue Awareness classroom course.

Course registration may be done by paper form or electronically.  Your Chief will need a PIN number from IFSI if you use electronic registration.

Course Mechanics:
Students will be notified about one week prior to the start of the course by their class instructor. Direction will be supplied via email providing login and further class information.
This is primarily a self-directed course. An instructor is available by email to handle course and learning content questions. Each course lasts approximately 30 days (depending on the length of the month). Student must complete all coursework within that time frame to pass the course.
Studies include:

  • Review of course objectives.
  • Define terms and definitions.
  • Course required reading (available for on and off-line study).
  • View online presentations.
  • Online quizzes.
  • Final examination. (state test for those wishing an Illinois OSFM certification).

Final Exam for Illinois State Certification
The final exam for OSFM State Certification is administered at your local library. Upon successful completion of all your course classroom work your instructor will provide you a test request form and instructions on taking your final exam.

Final for Non-Certification / IFSI Certificate
An end of course final exam is required for those students who do not wish to receive an Illinois State Certification or who are taking this course and reside outside of Illinois. IFSI will issue a certificate of completion upon you successfully passing the end of course examination. This exam will be administered online through Student and Staff Resource Center.
