Spring 2005
Project Overview:Ideas for a new anchor design drew upon concepts from current designs, with the goal of combining their various strengths into one new design. The new design utilizes a drop-in anchor and a crack bridging plate that is bonded to the concrete with epoxy. As the name suggests, the crack bridging plate serves to help arrest crack propagation that stems from the expansive forces associated with the drop-in anchor. Working prototypes of this new anchor design were fabricated, and were tested using the Instron MTS 880 Material Test System in the laboratory of Professor Peter Kurath. Current anchor designs were also tested, and the results of the experimentation indicated that the new design was superior to current designs, as the failure loads associated with it were greater.
Goals:A new drop-in anchor with a crack bridging plate will arrest crack propogation.
Conclusion:Testing indicated the new the bridging plate addition was superior to the original designs.
