Fire College FAQ

Where will Fire College take place?
Fire College will take place in various buildings and on-site locations throughout the Champaign-Urbana area. You will check-in at the Hilton Garden Inn at 1501 S. Neil Street in Champaign and will be given further information about the location of EACH class and the transportation arrangements that have been made to fulfill the needs of that class.

Where do I go when I get to Champaign?
Students are required to park at the Assembly Hall for shuttling to on-site registration in the lower level of the Hilton Garden Inn at 1501 S. Neil Street in Champaign. Parking is free at the Assembly Hall. Shuttle bus service will be provided continuously from the Assembly Hall parking lot to the Hilton Garden Inn for registration and classes. Parking is not available at the IFSI training grounds or at other class locations. Shuttle bus service will also be provided from Assembly Hall parking to training grounds and other class locations. Please refer to the brochure for class locations.

The Assembly Hall is located at:
U of I Assembly Hall
1800 S. First St.
Champaign, Illinois 61820

Parking is available in the Northwest and Southwest parking lots.

Is parking available?
There will be parking available in the Northwest and Southwest parking lots at the Assembly Hall. There will be NO PARKING at the IFSI site.

How do we get to our classes?
There will be buses and other transportation arranged to take you from the Assembly Hall to your courses.

Why do I need to enter my driver’s license number?
We have begun collecting drivers license numbers to serve as a number which uniquely identifies you. We can no longer use the social security number due to identity theft problems. The collection of the DL numbers is the beginning of what will eventually be a national accreditation system. Please make sure this number is accurate.

Why must I prioritize my choices 1-12?
Our registration system is setup to help you get your most desirable courses by implementing an automated waiting list system. By organizing our courses into your top 12 priorities we will be able to put you into your top courses automatically.

My department doesn’t have a PIN number, or we have lost our PIN information what can we do?
Each department in Illinois has been issued a PIN number for use. Your Chief and/or training officer is responsible for activating the PIN number by sending back the letter of acceptance for online registration and PIN usage. If he/she has not, then please encourage them to do so, as online registration is the preferred priority. If your department has lost the PIN information, then please contact IFSI immediately to re-establish the information.

What is the fastest way to register?
The absolute quickest way to complete your registration is through online registration. It will help you to do it accurately and to gather the information quickly. We recommend this option heavily.

Why can’t I prioritize more than 12?
We found that in the past we really haven’t had to use more than 3-4 priorities total, however we wanted to provide 3-4 per group of classes. Since there are two groups and the possibility for 24-hour classes we decided that prioritizing 4 for each set would be more than acceptable. If we find in the future that this number of priorities is too few then we will add more, but for now we have seen 12 to be very sufficient.

Will I find out about what classes I am in before I come to Fire College in May?
This year we have instituted an e-mail system for confirmation of courses. All registered students with VALID e-mail addresses will receive a notification which says what courses they are in, and whether they are still on waiting lists or whether your top priorities have been filled. Please make sure to include your e-mail address so you can receive this information, it WILL NOT be mailed.

After the e-mails go out are my courses final?
Not necessarily. If you have not gotten your top priorities yet then you are still on the waiting list, and could possibly get top priorities. You will NOT move DOWN in priorities after you receive the final confirmation notice. Cancellation of a class due to enrollment or support needs will also affect your class standing. You will not have absolute final confirmation until you arrive at fire college.

How does the waiting list work?
The waiting list will allow you to receive entry into courses in the order which you prioritized them. If your top priority is filled, and you get your 2 and 3, then priority 1 gets an available seat and you are first on the list then you will be taken from your priority 3 and placed into your priority 1. This will allow us to place you in the course you want the most, and hopefully help us to keep courses full even after cancellations.

The website said there were (x) seats available in the course, does this means I got the course?
No. The information displayed by the website for available seating in a course is information that was transferred the night before. The web based data is always an estimate of what is currently available. We are trying to keep you informed as much as we can, but there is no guarantee based on that information.

I made a mistake in my registration, what can I do?
Email, fax or mail Terri Hopper. All changes MUST be in writing.

If you cancel after this years no-penalty deadline you will still be liable for the fees.

I can only attend classes during one block of days, how should I prioritize to make sure this happens?
Do not prioritize anything that takes place during the other days. For example if you can only come Thursday/Friday, then don’t prioritize anything that is 24-hour or Saturday/Sunday.

I registered via the paper form and sent it in the mail, will someone who submits online today get their registration priorities in before mine?
Yes. Online registration is the preferred priority. We are encouraging people to register this way because it will help get them in courses ahead of people who fax and mail on the same day as they register online. Your registration will be processed in the order it was received. We receive online registrations first since they come all the time, then faxes, and finally the standard US mail.

There was a strange error during submission of online registration, what should I do?
Contact the IFSI webmaster(s) at webmaster@fsi.illinois.edu with your problem, what step of the registration you were on, your personal information, your web browser type, internet service provider, and contact information. Someone will get back to you ASAP about your problem.

How do I cancel my registration?

How much will Fire College cost this year?
Billing for Fire College this year has not changed. Each 2-day block will cost $75. If the block is hands-on then there will be an additional $75 lab fee. If you register after the Early Registration Deadline there is a $100 late fee. Lunch and a T-shirt are included in your registration.

Common Cost Scenarios:
$75: You are taking 1 classroom course and registered early.
$175: You are taking 1 classroom only course and registered late.
$150: You are taking classroom only classes all 4 days and registered early.
$150: You are taking 1 hands-on class either Thursday/Friday or Saturday/Sunday and registered early.
$250: You are taking classroom only classes all 4 days, and registered late.
$250: You are taking 1 hands-on class either Thursday/Friday or Saturday/Sunday and registered late.
$225: You are taking 1 hands-on class, and 1 classroom only class and registered early.
$325: You are taking 1 hands-on class, and 1 classroom only class and registered late.
$300: You are taking hands-on classes all 4 days and registered early.
$400: You are taking hands-on classes all 4 days and registered late.

Why is there a late fee?
The late fee is actually a registration processing fee that we waive if you register early. Registering early gives us more time to make sure all classes are filled to capacity and to make final decisions on instructors and materials needed. We want to encourage registering as early as possible and feel that the $100 savings is a good incentive.
